The Boom
5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche is Heinously Delicious
Hold on to your quiches! The Boom’s quick-witted, crazy good-time play 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche is comedy gold. Based in 1956, five ladies of superb style and class gather together at the annual quiche contest. This passionate group, known as The Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein, is prepared for anything. Armed with forks, ready to taste this year’s winning egg concoction, they gather in the community center turned bomb shelter. There, along with the audience members, they set off to taste and judge… Continue reading
Bonus Review: Hedwig and the Angry Inch Round 2
It’s a common theme amongst Hedwig and the Angry Inch die-hard fans. Affectionately known as “Hed-Heads”, we gather together at live performances of the show as often as we can. Scrunched together at the wobbly tables inside The Boom, we quiz each other on how many times we’ve seen Hedwig, when and where we first saw it, and what number we’re on for witnessing this cast. Counting myself amongst the most dedicated of Hed-Heads, this is a welcome conversation starter.
On this night… Continue reading
Hedwig at The Boom is Everything You’ve Waited For
Renowned stage and screen writer John Cameron Mitchell and musician Stephen Trask’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch is not a musical. It’s a rock narrative, disguised as theatre, which is disguised as a drag show, and it’s all balled up into the fire and fury of one wronged woman. It’s a middle American tragedy set in the back alley dive bars that decorate our country, playing host to the down and outs and the would be rock stars on open mic nights. And it’s unapologetically and unequivocally… Continue reading
Whether you like it or not… HEDWIG Returns to The Boom
Internationally ignored yet universally loved, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a hard-rock musical that takes no prisoners and makes its own rules. It is welcome in theatre much like its title character, Hedwig Robinson, makes her own way in the world; by not really fitting right in anywhere. Hedwig is born Hansel Schmidt, a gay man who faces a miserable fate in East Germany (remember THAT border wall?). Hansel is heavily influenced by American radio and learns the story of Plato’s Symposium, a tale that’s relayed in the iconic musical… Continue reading
Ridiculous Holiday Fun with The Boom’s Scrooge in Rouge
Scrooge in Rouge is a raucous parody of the beloved Charles Dickens tale “A Christmas Carol”. All seriousness aside, no really, don’t expect a single moment of genuinely serious dialogue, it pokes fun of the most famous Christmas story ever told in the best way possible. Already a disaster before it’s begun, the cast enters the stage with bad news. Everyone in the show, the cast that would exist if it were actually “A Christmas Carol”, has gotten food poisoning. The remaining players promise to pull off the… Continue reading
Rocky Horror is Back at The Boom and We’re So Glad!
By Jillian Ball and Adrienne Proctor
Oh, Brad! The Rocky Horror Picture Show at The Boom is an interactive crazy train that’s an absolute blast from start to finish.
Joshua McGowen is amazing as the twisted “sweet transvestite” Dr. Frank N. Furter. McGowen embodies the role with heat and attitude, making his own tweaks while staying true to the original. His makeup is gorgeous and his attitude is sharp. He has the audience enthralled from the second he appears onstage. However frantic… Continue reading
