A Theatre Reviewer Rambles: Meet Adrienne!

Hello! I’m Adrienne, the Managing Director of Oklahoma Art Scene and Hurd. I just graduated with a Master’s Degree in Aerospace Administration & Logistics from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant. It has NOTHING to do with theatre, but it’s helped me in all aspects of my writing! I started with Scene and Hurd in 2017. The first show I reviewed was a directed reading of “Bathrobe Club” by Adam Davies. The first full production I reviewed was Sam Shepard’s Ages of the Moon at Carpenter Square Theatre, and it’s still one of my favorites!… Continue reading

A central theme of Charles Dickens’ 1843 novella A Christmas Carol is honoring Christmas. Not just during the holiday season, but year-round. Shortly after the publication of the famous novella, it was adapted for the stage and began its first production run in 1844. The Victorian Era story of miserly Ebenezer Scrooge and the transformation he undergoes one fateful Christmas Eve is ubiquitous during the holiday season. Lyric Theatre’s adaptation by Producing Artistic Director Michael Baron is now in its ninth consecutive year, and it’s… Continue reading

Lyric Theatre’s beloved Holiday tradition, A Christmas Carol, returns to the Plaza this Christmas season. Based on the novella by Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a now mythical character first created in Victorian Era England at a time when Christmas wasn’t the annual celebration that it is today. In fact, Christmas wasn’t really celebrated at all, and the ideas of Christmas trees, carols, and holiday parties were considered westernized and trendy. Charles Dickens wrote the story, subtitled… Continue reading

By utilizing their students, they present a unique experience and a chance for young artists to hone their artistry and technical skills. Their fall production of Mary Poppins is challenging, a technical marvel, and an absolute delight. It’s a spoonful of sugar, and it goes down joyfully.

Mary Poppins is a beloved story for the ages. The 1964 Disney movie starring a youthful Julie Andrews as Mary and Dick Van Dyke as Bert is loved and cherished by the young and… Continue reading

October is beginning to look a lot like the holiday season warm-up. It’s busier than ever, especially for theatre. Artists, technicians, and reviewers alike are running crazy trying to get everything covered. This writer is LIVING for the tight schedule, just focusing on one musical, and one pumpkin spice latte, at a time.

Rocky Horror has a following like no other, with an ability to raise the freak flags in even the most demure fans. Rocky Horror is nearly nonsensical in the looseness of the plot. However, there’s a true perfection in it that can’t be found in any… Continue reading

Lyric Theatre’s Frost/Nixon Hits Close to Home

Peter Morgan’s Frost/Nixon is based on the 1977 televised interviews between British talk-show host David Frost and the resigned and disgraced President Richard Nixon. When the Watergate scandal happened, the country became divided. The president resigned and was immediately pardoned, leaving the American people with none of the answers or justice they deserved. Americans lost faith in the political system. They became hardened by the idea that the very office they held in highest regard was nothing but a corrupt business.… Continue reading
