The Pollard’s Dracula is a creepy night of Screams and Scares

Dracula is presented via a live read-through.

The Pollard Theatre Company has faced its fair share of setbacks in the past year. The pandemic forced the closure of the 2020 season, and the historic theatre finally reopened for Season 34, In Good Company, in August 2021. A late summer storm caused extensive damage to the lighting and sound systems in the theatre, and the company was once again forced to cancel an upcoming production. Bram Stoker’s Dracula was slated for a full production, but with the theatre still in repair mode, an alternative option had to be utilized. Always the… Continue reading

“Macbeth” often referred to as The Scottish Play by the superstitious, never fails to intrigue an audience and Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park’s presentation is certainly no exception.  Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park (OSP) is located in the fabulous and historical Paseo district and during the lull caused by the pandemic engaged in extensive remodeling. They created an amphitheater enabling outdoor performances at this location while still heeding equity rules. … Continue reading

Chagrin Falls at 3rd Act Theatre is Outstanding.

Mia McCullough is a talented playwright with many awards to her name.  Her play titled “Chagrin Falls” is currently being presented at 3rd Act Theatre in Oklahoma City.  Amandanell Bold directs a cast of four men and two women. The action takes place in the small Oklahoma town, Chagrin Falls, named for a four-foot cascade outside of town.  Oklahomans can be a rather self-deprecating lot, and initially the townsfolk seem rather defensive about where they live and work.… Continue reading

The Venetian Carnival Celebration of Painted Sky Opera Shines for Patrons

The gloom of this world is but a shadow and singers must lift their voices to the sky painting it with the sounds of glory.  Yes, this pandemic has brought loss and tragedy to us all and recovery is ponderous.  There are set backs and slip ups but through the tragedy there is the bright light of life and survival. And, in opera, tragedy can be the core that brings us together as one race, one people… Continue reading

UCO returns to Mitchell Hall with RENT

(L-R) Jaylon Crump as Tom Collins and Samuel Moran as Angel

UCO’s College of Fine Arts and Design (CFAD) and the Musical Theatre Division present Jonathan Larson’s Rent, running until October 10th at Mitchell Hall Theatre. UCO’s Musical Theatre program is one of the best in the state. They produce big, bold works, and never shy away from tough subjects. Rent is polarizing, at times controversial, and it’s an institution of American musical theatre history. Love it or hate it, nearly everyone has an opinion on it. Playwright Jonathan Larson died suddenly before Rent was out of previews,… Continue reading

Meteor Shower at Carpenter Square Theatre Needs a Bigger Audience.

……………………………………………………………………………..Reviewed by Scott Myers

7/10/2021

The cast of Carpenter Square’s production of Meteor Shower. From left, Lilli Bassett, Terry Veal, Ed Spinelli and Mikie Gilmore.

The final production of this ensemble play is written by a “wild and crazy guy,” Steve Martin. Martin is a television/film actor as well as a writer and Meteor Shower is about a true scientific event . I mention this mixed media performance because the story told by this energetic cast of 4 seemed like a tv show and at times a comedy play.

The story starts out with a nervous Corky, played with vigor… Continue reading

Jewel Box Theatre- “A Good old fashioned mystery” for their new venue.

I was out wandering around (in my air-conditioned car, of course) and saw a line of cars filing into what used to be Jewel Box Theatre’s old home but instead, they were driving down a slightly different road (I followed the many signs along the road) to what appeared to be their NEW venue. I found myself curiously drawn into this building which advertised The Vultures, by Mark A. Ridge. I picked up a program, without opening it, and found a comfortable seat. on a raised platform overlooking the Library set (competently designed by Shawn Hancock) I would… Continue reading

Grease Scores BIG on Football Field Show!

…………………………………………………………..……………………By Scott Myers

I  was driving around the other night trying to stay cool in my air-conditioned  car. Being curious, when I saw a crowd gathering at Bishop McGuiness’ High School football stadium, I pulled into the parking lot and noticed their field strewn with various large platforms with castors (wheels), colored stage lights and fifties/early sixties’ music coming from within. Turns out that Lyric Theatre was debuting their production of Grease, by Jim Jacobs & Warren Casey on the football field that evening.

I’ve seen shows presented on all types of venues… Continue reading
