Fun, dazzling, and inspiring, musical theatre can sometimes be so moving and ground-breaking that it becomes more than just entertainment. In the early 1980’s Joe Sears, Ed Howard and Jaston Williams first imagined the town of Tuna, Texas as a familiar place for many Americans.  Tuna is a small southern town with a definitive culture, celebrating what they know has worked for generations, unaware that generations to follow are more sophisticated, but not necessarily less determinate.  The show celebrates the greatness of these Americans even as the dialogue holds up those inbred notions of self-superiority to ridicule; we must admire their strength and… Continue reading

March 17 has been declared Donald Jordan and Jonathan Beck Reed Day by Governor Mary Fallin.  Wow, what an opening night for “Greater Tuna” this Saturday.

“Greater Tuna” the brilliant two man show with too many parts to count has been fascinating audiences and filling them with laughter since 1981. Joe Sears, Jaston Williams and Ed Howard wrote the hit comedy and Sears and Williams have toured it frequently over the years.

Another two actors, cast in the show in 1985, were intrigued with… Continue reading

Judy Collins Dazzles Audience at OCCC

Judy Collins conquered Oklahoma City last night.  She came to OCCC to perform at the invitation of Oklahoma City Repertory Theatre (CityRep) and gave us a magnificent concert.  Concentrating on the great songs from Sondheim’s wonderful repertoire Judy Collins is magnificent.  Collins has had a long career in folk music, including folk/rock, folk/country and folk/everything.

She began her musical life as a piano prodigy and as a teenager was seduced by the beautiful folk ballads she heard.  Later, living in New York City she stood at the beginning of a… Continue reading

“The Good Doctor” is IN! The House at Jewel Box Theatre

“The Good Doctor” is one of Neil Simon’s most intriguing comedic endeavors, it transcends Simon’s wit embracing Anton Chekhov’s satire enhancing the humor in many cases but also diluting the power in the Chekhovian stories.  Simon’s character of The Writer/Narrator is a sympathetic caricature of Anton Chekhov telling stories based on those written by Chekhov in most cases.  The play also includes one vignette based on a song by Peter Link (Too Late for Happiness)… Continue reading

“A Few Good Men” is currently impressing audiences at the Pollard theatre in Guthrie Oklahoma.  Two marines are to stand trial for the murder of a fellow soldier while stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.  The two soldiers may have been ‘hazing’ their fellow soldier, or ‘directed’ (a ‘code red’ unofficial order) to motivate a marine when he unexpectedly died.  A Love Letter to Stephen Sondheim

A generation or so ago the folk songs began to come back.  They had never left, they were simply incognito for a time, but the resurgence made them young again.  The young folk singing them again and writing them never grew old or any wiser but they gave us anthems that anchored us.  Such a singer/songwriter is Judy Collins, questioning, learning, teaching, singing, writing and sharing.  On March 9, she will be here again and… Continue reading
